Crown and Bridge: A crown or cap is a dental restoration that covers the exposed surface of a tooth to strengthen it or improve its appearance. A bridge is a dental restoration to replace one or more missing teeth. It includes an artificial tooth or teeth which are fused to crowns on either side to provide support. Crowns and bridges are designed to match the natural shape and strength of the teeth and can be made up of different types of material.

How are Crowns and Bridges different:

  • Crowns cover or encase a tooth, while bridges connect a jaw that has been lost.
  • A crown is a permanent prosthesis.
  • The dentist makes an impression of the tooth and sends it off to a dental technician.
  • The technician makes the prosthesis out of gold, porcelain, or both.
  • Crowns and bridges both have to be cemented onto your teeth.
  • Crowns are permanent and they need to be cemented onto your teeth by a dentist.
  • Bridges are movable and cemented onto the teeth by the patient.
  • Both must be replaced from time to time.
